The M727 MIM-23 was a self-propelled missile launcher for the American MIM-23 HAWK air defense system, based on the tracked chassis of the M548 - an extended transport variant of the M113. It was developed to enhance the mobility of HAWK air defense batteries and to better support mechanized units. Unlike the originally towed HAWK launchers, the M727 could change positions much more rapidly, allowing for greater flexibility in responding to shifting combat situations.

The vehicle was powered by a 212 hp Detroit Diesel 6V53 engine and achieved a top speed of approximately 60 km/h. Mounted at the rear was a launcher for three MIM-23 HAWK guided missiles, capable - depending on the version - of engaging aerial targets at ranges of up to roughly 40 kilometers. However, the M727 lacked its own search or fire-control radar and was fully integrated into the HAWK weapon system; target acquisition and fire control were handled by the HAWK battery's radar units.

The M727 was primarily operated by the US Army and various NATO nations during the Cold War. It was gradually phased out of service following the introduction of modern air defense systems such as the Patriot. Combining the proven M548 tracked chassis with the distinctive triple HAWK missile launcher, the M727 stands out today as one of the most interesting self-propelled air defense vehicles of its era and serves as an exceptional subject for models of Cold War air defense systems.
